Catchy, contagious, chill, and euphonious is what describes the latest album by the popular boy band Maroon 5. After five years of anticipation, the band has finally released a fresh album, “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long.”
Old fans will be surprised by the new sophistication of the sounds by vocalist Adam Levine (lead singer) and band members James Valentine, Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden and Matt Flynn. Even after back-up vocalist Ryan Dusick left Maroon 5, the band still remains coherent with new drummer Matt Flynn.
If you loved the hit “She Will Be Loved” and “Sunday Morning,” chances are you’ll cherish this new album. The majority of the songs on this CD are slow paced, including “Won’t Go Home Without You,” “Nothing Lasts Forever,” “Goodnight goodnight,” “Better That We Break,” and “Back At Your Door.” Although several fans adored the popular song “She Will Be Loved,” I was slightly disappointed in the number of slow songs; I expected an upbeat album to follow “Songs About Jane.”
Listeners will be relieved and satisfied over the band’s newest hit, “Makes Me Wonder.” With similar fast rhythm and infectious lyrics, this is a song everyone will want to blast in their cars on the way to Stonestown on a Friday night. “Can’t Stop” and “Kiwi” are soon-to-be favorites with lyrics that teenagers will be shouting at high school dances, and a funk-infuted drum beat that teens will want to move to.
Levine describes this album as “sexier and stronger,” two words that definitely describe Maroon 5’s new sound. The diction is more sensual, yet even after all these years, is still about love. Instead of singing songs about Jane or a new crush, “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long” consists mainly of songs in which the singer hasn’t moved on from a relationship break-up. Obsessions and images of a girl are what inhabit the singer’s mind while singing the song.
Maroon 5 is similar to last year’s extremely loved alternative and pop band The Fray. The two bands are similar with voices, gender and number of hits. If you enjoy listening to singers such Justin Timberlake and Outkast, chances are you’ll be satisfied singing to this CD in car rides. I rate this album a 4 out of 5 stars. Even if the band has a slightly new sound, I still love their addicting love song lyrics for life!
