Harold and Kumar are back

The dynamic duo is back to kick off another series of summer flicks. If you were thinking Batman and Robin, turn to the next page. I’m talking about Harold and Kumar. The two slackers are back and better than ever; they are fighting off government agents, encountering rural hillbillies and actor Neil Patrick Harris, even the President in this action- packed comedy.

The story takes off right where their previous movie ended. The audience could easily watch both movies back to back and it would become a four hour long movie. The scene starts off with Harold (John Cho), getting cleaned up after an elevator ride with the love of his life, Maria (Paula Garces). He then suddenly realizes he has one hour to get to the airport because Kumar (Kal Penn) decided to book them on for the next flight to Amsterdam. We later meet Kumar’s high school sweetheart and find out she’s about to be married to a jerk. At the airport, they experience hours of security only to be told that they have to go through a ‘random’ security check, which launches the racism themed jokes throughout the movie.

Harold and Kumar finally get comfortable aboard the airplane, until a lady calls Kumar a terrorist because he has a bomb- looking smokeless bong. It causes a riot and sends the whole plane into panic. Kumar breaks the bong, which causes what is supposedly ‘poison gas’ to be released into the air. The duo is tackled down by three air marshals. This kicks off the crazy chase, similar to the adventure in the first movie. They get stuck in Guantanamo Bay and plan to escape within 20 hours to flee back to America. This transcontinental chase contains run ins with various characters in order to ruin Kumar’s Ex’s wedding. The pair is chased by the head of homeland security across the southern half of America, which throws out a slew of racism lined jokes.

In the end, Harold and Kumar was hilarious. It was well worth the $10.50 I paid. Although it had a racist joke here and there, the movie still played it off well with a hidden love story inside a guy comedy. It did not really venture different from the first original movie, but still kept me compelled to keep watching. Then again, if you’re doing something right why change it?

I give Harold and Kumar : Escape from Guantanamo Bay

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.
