Lincoln student wins $60,000 scholarship
Who won a $60,000 scholarship to a college in New York? Goss Luo, that’s who. Luo, a senior at Lincoln, was nominated for a scholarship to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for his outstanding science, and math grades. Luo worked very hard to be nominated to win a scholarship to attend such a prestigious school.
Every year ALHS chooses to nominate a handful of students to grab a chance at this scholarship and only one is admitted into Rensselaer. Only the top 10% high schools are able to do this.
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is located Troy, NY, which is about 150 miles north of New York City. The college is well known for it’s top performing students and academic programs.
“Let this scholarship serve as an example to all Lincoln students of the value of hard work,” said assistant principal Barnaby Payne.
In order to get nominated for the scholarship, you must be recommended by the math department head, Beverly Austin, or the science department head, Jonathan Frank. Luo is the only student at ALHS to be recommended by both math and science department heads.
Talking about how he felt when he was told about the scholarship, Luo said, “It feels good, I never expected that!”
“It shows what a person can accomplish…this is an extraordinary opportunity for him. I wish him the very best” substitute teacher Michael Lapon said.
So how did Luo do it? He sets away time in his day to do his homework.
“It doesn’t matter what time it is. 11, 12, I just do it…when I do my work I do nothing else. No distractions,” Luo said. “For junior year I spent mostly 2 hours and above studying. This year has a little bit less.”
Luo only took 6 classes per semester since starting high school. Ever since his freshmen year he has had honor classes. Junior year is when he started taking AP classes. Luo also shows excellence in citizenship. On top of this, he has just about perfect attendance. Luo only has three unexcused absences.
Senior counselor Connie Chan honored Luo at the senior homeroom meeting for his outstanding 4.00 GPA in the second semester of junior year. (He missed getting a 4.00 GPA his first semester of junior year by two B’s.) Luo is an outstanding student as well as an outstanding guy. So do your best in school and maybe you can just do it! Way to go Goss! Congratulations!
