Alpha company takes first in Guidon Competition
The students went wild as Battalion Commander Vienna Luu announced that she had the results to the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Motto/Guidon Competition on Oct. 12.
Although Motto Competition and Guidon Competition were separate in the past years, this year they combined due to weather conditions. The Motto Competition was originally scheduled on Thursday, Oct. 5.
The JROTC Motto Competition is a competition to motivate new cadets that have recently joined JROTC. In Motto Competition, each of the companies: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and Echo make up a motto and have to cheer as loud as they could in the competition. Bravo Company provided a short, simple yet good motto and cheered really loud which gave them first place. In second place was Alpha Company and in third was Charlie.
In JROTC, a Guidon competition is when each company’s Guidon competes to see who drills the best and who does it the sharpest. A Guidon is a person chosen by the company to drill with a flag. As the commands remain the same with the other cadets, the movements are different and difficult to learn. Each company’s Guidon should be fast, and have a lot of strength and stamina.
Alpha Company’s Guidon, Alexander Tam, won first place which meant that he was sharpest of the bunch. Tam is a senior in JROTC, which means he cannot compete in the JROTC Fall Competition. Runner-up sophomore Kelly Marker, Bravo’s Guidon, will be competing in JROTC Fall Competition this November. Charlie Company won third place with freshman Hsi Wang as their Guidon.
