Swim test still required for graduation

Sava Pool remains open

The rumors about the swim test being cancelled were incorrect. It was never cancelled and all students are still required to take the test in order to graduate from high school.

Sava Pool will not be closing for renovation either. Sava Pool could not get a contractor for renovation during the months of May, June, and July of this past year. Earlier reports in the Examiner stated that Sava Pool would not get renovated anytime in the near future.

“There is no sign of closing in the time being,” Ms. Weinhouse, the swim test coordinator said.

A number of students are divided on the subject of the swim test. Many are for it, and some are against it. Junior Yannie Wong already passed her swim test, but still thinks it is unfair.

“It is not fair to make it a requirement [to graduate] because you shouldn’t force people to do something to graduate,” Wong said.

On the other hand senior Tyrone Li thinks positively about the swim test.

“It’s useful in life. Especially in college because hazing happens in college, and if you get dumped into a pool at least you know how to swim.”

Seniors will still be able to take their test at Sava Pool (located on 19th and Wawona Street). Freshmen may take their test ASAP on either day, Monday through Thursday, during 1st period or 2nd period. However, the students must get permission from their 1st or 2nd period teachers to be excused on that day.

A senior who asked to remain anonymous thinks that the swim test is unnecessary.

“Not all seniors have taken the [swimming] class, so there is no point of being tested on something some have not learned,” he said, “Why in the world do you think companies make ‘floaties’…?”
