Chris Garcia and Greg Jones, two Lincoln students, were killed this past summer. They would have been juniors this year.

“It was shocking,” said junior and friend of victims, Devin Koch. Devin knew Chris since grade school. “Now you know that it could happen to anyone.”

According to administrators and students, reporters flocked to get the scoop on what happened. But whether or not their printed stories were accurate is in question amongst those who knew the boys.

“The newspaper story is off,” said senior Holly Ye, a friend of the two boys. “There [are] so many different rumors, I don’t know what to believe.”

Those close to them retain the fond memories of their good qualities that they know to be true.

“Chris always had a smile on his face. Always. Greg could make anything funny,” Ye said.

Some people had known them for years and were still friends with them.

“In middle school, we were all like one big family,” wrote senior Leila René in a letter about what Chris and Greg meant to her. “I’m glad to have all the memories in my heart every single second of the day.”

The La Raza Unida club is working on a memorial to commemorate their lives. The memorial is posted on a bulletin board next to the doors to the main office. Currently on display is a poem written for Chris and Greg by Dean Joel Balzer. La Raza is considering including the beanies that the boys were known for wearing.
