First annual Lincoln Gladiators- were you ready?

The new year unveils new beginnings here at Abraham Lincoln High School. This includes the unveiling of the Lincoln Gladiators – the first in the school’s history. Founded by the junior and senior officers along with Valerie Ziegler, it was a way to raise money. Thinking of fun, new ways that will attract many, the officers put their minds together and came up with a friendly competition everyone can participate in.

“We wanted to do something different that would bring the school community together

in a different kind of way.” said english teacher Sarah Falls. And it did, many students and teachers participated in the event in the South Gym. The tournament started with the introduction of the teams by hosts Elane Walenta and Dominic Butler-Parker. After the introduction began the ten-round competition in which a total of 22 teams participated in. The teams competed in ten activities that included: hool-a-hoop, connect four,

and tug of war. The audience was in awe of

the competitive drive of the players.

“I thought it was actually funny, maybe they’ll do it next year too,” said sophomore Omisha Jackson as she watches the games before the awaited half time. After all ten rounds, and before the final showdown, was a fashion show. Lincoln students walked down the makeshift “runway” in the gym, clad in prom attire. Dresses were from the courtesy of David’s Bridal and suits were from The Men’s Warehouse.

We wanted to do something different that would bring the school community together.

After the show, the finalists were announced and the showdown between the top two

teams began. The final showdown was a face off between the “Dynasty Warriors” and the “Slim

and Cut.” A race for the last two teams was arranged in six different obstacles. The first to finish the entire obstacle would be dubbed the ultimate Lincoln Gladiator. The winners. After the tense and energy-ridden face-off, “Slim and Cut,” proved to be on top and now holds the title “Lincoln’s Ultimate Gladiators.” The members of the team are Shawn Meneses, Christian Calub, Paul Billedo, and Alex Wong. With gleaming beads of sweat running down their faces, the team members shined with accomplishment as they finished the race on top as winners.

“It feels really great, it was really fun and exciting. We thought we could have it and we did,” says Billedo.

A new tradition has been begat- The Lincoln Gladiators.
