During certain school dances
During certain school dances guys compete for the titles of King, Prince, Duke, and Knight, while girls run for Queen, Princess, Duchess, and Maiden. However, what if a guy wanted to run for maiden? Or if a girl wanted to run for Prince? According to the rules, we’re not allowed to.
While running for court, we’re limited to run only for the position normally associated with our gender, unless we have a strong argument as to why not. For instance, under the condition that we identify with other gender instead of our own, we allowed to run for that position.
Personally, if I were running for court, I wouldn’t want to be declared Queen. I’d feel more comfortable with and would prefer the title of King because Queen just is too girly for me. I’m captain of the wrestling team. If I can compete against guys wrestling, why can’t I compete against guys for the title of King?
Society isn’t set to be strictly black and white. Women are excelling in fields usually dominated by men and vice-versa. Women try to make a place for themselves among the men for jobs in the business world and in sports. Men make their mark among women in the fashion and make-up industry. If the rest of society doesn’t care what gender we are during other competitions, why should it matter which court position we compete for?
Last year a girl was allowed to run for king. Her sexual orientation preference was King. I feel that this is a valid excuse because she wouldn’t have felt right as Queen. I wouldn’t want to force anyone to do anything that would cause him or her to feel uncomfortable if they had a choice not too.
The way court is set up for girls and guys to run for only certain positions seems unfair and stupid; It shouldn’t be set in stone and be just one way. We shouldn’t see a title such as princess and associate it immediately with a pretty girl and a gorgeous gown. People should be able to interpret the titles however they wish.
