Music to my Ears

When I think of things that are popular, it usually isn’t something that I would find interesting. This is odd though, because if something is considered popular, then shouldn’t a majority of people find it appealing? According to www.dictionary.com, the word popular is defined as “regarded with favor, approval, or affection by people in general,” and “suited to or intended for the general masses of people.” Now that we’ve got a clear idea of what popular actually is, let’s explore what is actually wrong with what’s currently dubbed “popular.”
Look at the media. Everything that’s considered popular originates there. Apparently, people have to be outgoing and show a lot of skin to become popular. Sex appeal and crude language is what sells papers. However, does that mean it’s “intended for the general masses”? Do you really want your five-year-old sister exposed to Paris Hilton in one of her many revealing dresses? This type of attention only creates problems by telling others that they can’t be “popular” unless they act that way. Not good for one’s self esteem or morals, mind you.
Music today has its own genre for what seems to be “popular” (it’s shortened to “pop”). Justin Timberlake and Gwen Stefani fall into this category. Personally, I can’t stand the “Sexyback” song, and Stefani lost all her appeal when she left No Doubt. If you notice, all these people sing in squeaky voices about only love and money. This doesn’t allow for personal growth. How can one get ahead in life if all they think of is the song about the girl next door? Why do you think that it’s mainly young people who listen to pop music? It’s childish. It reflects how youth think, making the music more marketable to those who will buy it.
Attention is gained from the media saying that something is “new” or “in style;” however, is it really that good? In reality, it’s not going to make you think about anything more than the opposite sex or whatever crazy stunt Lindsay Lohan pulled. What happened to good songs about myriad topics, or the news that your best friends just won an award in a math contest? At least math is more useful than Britney Spears. People need to stop looking to the media for news and start focusing on more important things in life. Once people do that, they can start truly appreciating their lives and become more aware of what they themselves do. So stop listening to Fergie and better your life!
