Expanding minds and expanding music

We all listen to music; however, many of my friends listen to the same artists or genres over and over again. I personally don’t feel that it’s good for a person to do so. I find myself asking if they would even consider listening to other types of music. If someone listens to the same music over and over again, then they won’t be as accepting as those who listen to a wide range of genres.

If people want to be more understanding of other cultures, then they should definitely listen to music in other languages. In France, a lot of songs don’t favor the police or political figures, but if others only knew about the riots, then it would make more sense. In America we only talk about killing the police cause they probably booked someone for actions that were their fault in the first place. In Africa there are songs aimed towards weddings and how people celebrate. They might seem like weird topics, but it’s only because we don’t face these topics in our everyday life.

Whenever I try to do homework while listening to music, I find that I can’t concentrate because I always find myself singing along or humming to the beat. This happens to a lot of people, and it would probably be beneficial if we listened to songs without words. Sure, classical music is great, and it’s good to relax and do homework to, but high school kids don’t usually like classical. Other options are to listen to songs that you don’t know too well, because if you play “Sexyback” while doing your English essay, you will probably not do as much work, or even worse, you might start quoting the song in your essay. Listen to groups like Air or Boards of Canada instead. Many of their songs don’t have lyrics, and they still have good music.

When listening to the same music over and over again, it can get a bit boring. Try to go out of your comfort zone; look for new artists and genres that you wouldn’t normally listen to. I bet you’d be surprised by the music you find.
