Lately in Hollywood there seems to be a new vulgar word. It’s more harsh and it’s worst than the F- word. People have been using it like there’s nothing wrong with it. How can such a word sweep the nation like a disease? What might be that word you wonder, it’s faggot.
It all started on the set of “Grey’s Anatomy” when Isaiah Washington, who plays Dr. Preston Burke, called fellow castmate T.R. Knight, who plays George O’Malley, a fag. The news broke out the next day and all the tabloids labeled Washington as a homophobic. Washington quickly recanted and told the public that he never called Knight that. After the “Grey’s Anatomy” Golden Globe win Washington made it nessarry to say that he never called Knight a fag. However, later Knight went on a daytime talk show and told the real story behind Washington’s homophobia. Knight set the story straight, came out as an openly gay man, and was harassed by Washington.
Ever since this controversy started, it seems to me that more and more people are open to using this word. I walk around this school and people are just blurting out the words fag or faggot like it’s no big deal. Remember back when this word was worst insult anyone could receive. It was so bad that people looked down on those who used it. What happened to those days? What made it okay to use it as an everyday word? My theory is that the straight men that play gays used those words like it’s part of their culture. For example Will and Jack from hit television show “Will and Grace” often called each other fags. Could it be that we have picked up this horrible habit?
It’s the 21st century and we have replaced the words like jewelry and hang out with “bling” and “kick it.” We even managed to replace gays with fag. The word fag is now so extreme that it’s even more horrible than the F-word. What can we do to solve this problem?
