Is beauty in this century more important than brains? I believe it is. In this century beauty has transformed itself, before it was just being yourself is the best beauty you can offer. Nowadays just being pretty or attractive on the inside isn’t enough because no one really cares at first. I believe teenagers are pressured to dress much nicer for school than before because of their lack of self-confidence, wanting to show off and to get more attention. Teenagers I believe within these few decades self-confidence has become lower because we are always surrounded by the media that always reminds or shows us how to look a certain way, how to dress, and how it will make you become more attractive or seem cooler. Personally I have felt this pressure. When I dress extra nice for school I feel much more confident and happier than I would if I wore sweatpants with an extra long shirt. I don’t think it’s a crime to dress nicer than usual but it can be when you care more about your outer appearance than your school life.
I personally have seen girls and boys at Lincoln High dress too nice just for school. I’ve seen and know a few girls that either have their hair curled or wear heavy makeup just to look more attractive and to get attention from anyone who cares to look. Is it really worth it to curl your hair and wake up an hour earlier just to fix it for one day? Sure for picture day or something important. Is it worth it to spend time to put on heavy makeup every single day? I understand that girls like to look nice and pretty but it’s not always necessary for school. As for myself I love to wear makeup but it’s on the weekends because I have a lot more time for it and I feel it’s more necessary to do so than in school.
I’ve seen and know guys that dress up extra nice from head to toe so that they can get noticed more by girls and to be “the talk” of his friends and vice versa. A negative side I’ve seen from guys always dressing extra nice for school is that they tend to be a bit cocky. It’s fine if you have self confidence of what you wear and how you look but when your self confidence turns ugly it becomes bad.
In a study I’ve personally done it was very shocking to me that no one truly cared about my outer appearances when I asking for job applications and to see how they would react. It was interesting and funny to me that when I was just wearing sweatpants, a sweater, running shoes, messed up hair and probably food stuck in my teeth the people I asked treated me a bit better than they did to me when I was dressed more attractive. The day that I dressed more attractive I went to Claire’s at Serramonte Center and asked for a job application, the person I asked was an assistant manager and she didn’t even bother to take a quick glance at me. I guess fixing earrings was more important than caring about who they will hire.
Beauty was never considered as blonde hair, blue eyes, skinny waist, big breasts, and big butts. For guys it’s having muscular body, nice butt, tall, and attractive looking but thanks to television, music, clothing designs, and all the things teenagers use or see in life has something to involve with beauty with these features. Before being beautiful use to mean on how smart this person is, how well she/he had accomplished in life, what she/he has done that’s heroic, and what did she/he risk her/his life for. Now it’s about who has the newest shoes, coolest hairstyle, the most expensive purses, their style of clothing, what brand they wear and just things that’s not that necessary to care about.
