Mustangs and Eagles collide
61st anniversary of the Bell Game brings Lincoln Victory
On Oct. 21, 2006 the defending Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) Champions, Abraham Lincoln High School Varsity football team gave the crowd of crimson and gold mustang fans plenty to cheer about when they defeated the George Washington High School Eagles, 11-6 winning the 61st Annual Bell Game.
“In the end it was a dead given battle. Everybody left it on the field but we had to win this year,” offensive and defensive line junior Marquice Lewis said.
The football team has put in countless hours of practice in preparation for the fall season. Monday through Saturday, the team practices everything that they will need to play their game from weight lifting to running plays.
In the 61-year history of the bell game, the eagles stand at 31 wins, the mustangs stand at 29 wins, and one tie stands between the two team. This year marks the team win for the bell for the second straight year in a row.
“We’ve got to enjoy the wins. We work hard everyday and that’s what we try to do,” head coach Phillip Ferrigno said.
The second win for the bell is rewarding for all the players.
“It’s good [to win the bell game again]. Two years in a row is always a good thing,” senior Phillipe Lewis said.
This year is the fifth year of Ferrigno’s reign as head coach of the Lincoln football team. Upon coming to Lincoln, Ferrigno coached at Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory, Archbishop Riordan High School, and City College of San Francisco. Ferrigno’s passion for the team as well as the game hardly goes unnoticed.
“This is for our coach. He has our backs, he’s always with us, he’s in our hearts all the time and every time we step on this field we got to do it for him,” Lewis said.
The team is aiming to make it the end of the season with a turkey day win. Turkey day is which takes place on thanksgiving day, is the last game of the season in which the two best teams in the league face off against each other. The team is eager to play in turkey day with key players seniors Felep Luis, Galen Davis, junior David Anderson, and sophomore Ricky Ohissen
“The team needs unity in order to be successful. We should be undefeated, and we should play at the best of our ability,” senior Galen Davis said.
