Coach Noel Yescas demonstrates a new technique to his eager students as he wrestles an opponent onto a mat that stenches of body order. His arms flail hoping for an advantage, his leg locks followed by moments of his body contorting. The pin is set.

Wrestling contains fourteen weight classes, starting with the 103-pound weight class. You may even be 89 pounds to compete. The heaviest class is 275 pounds. Between those two classes consists of other 14 weight classes.

“There’s a place for everyone and size doesn’t really matter.” Yescas said.

The skill level required to join wrestling also does not matter. Yescas believes anyone can join wrestling despite his or her weight or skill. The wrestling teams practices with different types of exercises including everything from pushups to weights.

“This year everybody is new on the team, but we have a lot of kids who are dedicated. [For example,] a lot of strong dedicated kids from the football team who I think will help us get a better finish in the standings then we did last year.” Coach Noel Yescas said.

Having to be Yescas’ second year at Lincoln, this is his 12th year coaching in the league. He previously taught at Marshall High School. Since they did not have a wrestling team, Yescas decided to start one. He also coached at Mission High School, as well as McAteer.

“We compete as a team and as individuals. And because of the hard work that you go threw, everybody bonds.” Yescas said.

The team tries their best for each game, but they know that winning isn’t everything. Yescas believes if they are presence and work their hardest, they will gain a new kind of self-confidence. He wants to see the team improve and if they end up winning, he believes they’ll get more out of it than just trophies.

“These guys work really hard and I think this is going to be one of the best seasons in 10 years.” Yescas said.
