Girls' golf makes playoffs

Breaking the tradition of a loss of matches in the past years at Abraham Lincoln High School, the girls’ golf team has made the playoffs for the first time ever. They tied in the playoffs against Galileo High School at Golden Gate Park. However, in the second death round, Galileo took the lead and won that round, leaving Lincoln High with third place. Lowell High School took first place last year and again this year.

The golfers practice intensively at least three days a week at Golden Gate Park, Harding Park, or at the golf course in San Bruno. One of their drills is simply practicing putting the ball into each hole. In addition to golfing after school, one of the golfers even practices with her family at a private club every weekend in the morning.

“I play three to four times a week, and put in a lot of hours in the morning and night. I get to Lake Merced Country Club at six in the morning and leave at 12 on Saturday and Sundays,” freshman golfer Andrea Fung said. She’s the only golfer from ALHS to qualify for the North Calif. Golf Competition in Sacramento.

This year the team consists of underclassmen that are new on the team, although they aren’t new at golfing. The key players for the team this season are freshman Andrea Fung, Jimin Lee and from the players on the team vary from the beginning level to having played golf for several years. Barrie Diggs, sophomores Amanda Lim and Monica Saint, and junior Maria Zhao. The skills from the players on the team vary from the beginning level to having played golf for several years.

Although the Lincoln girls’ golf team didn’t move on further to the championships, coach Steven Robinson is confident that the girls will make it farther next year, especially since all the players are underclassmen and will return next year.

“This is the best team we’ve had since I’ve been here. Now we have three freshmen that are serious golfers, which makes all the difference. The next few years should be pretty good,” Robinson said.
