“We’re going to the [champion] ship!” sophomore right fielder Monica Saint said. She is confident that her varsity softball team will make it to the playoffs. The team this year is very unique in that they have eight seniors and eight freshmen.

Some may think that having several seniors on a team as a difficulty, but having eight freshmen joining is a great contribution as well. These freshmen have talent and softball coach Kevin Grayson has a lot of confidence in their ability.

“We’re old and we’re rebuilding at the same time,” Grayson said. With eight seniors, two sophomores, one junior, and eight freshmen they will have a promising season. They all have confidence and ability in their season to be a success.

The lady mustangs practice anywhere and everywhere there is room. They try to be progressive by practicing every weekday, even when it rains. This is outstanding considering that most sports teams would usually cancel practice if the weather took a turn for the worse. The softball team has practiced in the cafeteria, auditorium, tennis courts, and sometimes the hallways.

The freshmen players have experience playing softball from their middle school teams. Some older players are less experienced and aren’t the best on the team, these freshmen are the hardest workers on the teams. They give the most effort to improving their skills.

Just like the other sports and clubs at Lincoln High, the team creates a sense of family.

“We feel pretty whole like a family. We come and it’s like a whole different feeling in here. Outside you’re with your friends and in your cliques, but then you come here and you’re the softball team,” senior left fielder Kimberly Lung said.

Senior co-captain and catcher Faatuaiitaua Tunai feels very confident that the freshmen will accomplish many things. She was surprised in how many freshmen tried out and how much talent and experience they had from the beginning. All of the freshmen softball players were once members of their middle school softball team. She feels as if she is “passing the torch over to them. They should be good for the next couple of years,” Tunai said.

The greatest opponents for the lady mustangs are expected to be the Lowell High School cardinals and George Washington High School eagles because those schools have a tradition of strong softball players.

The next softball game will take place on Feb. 28 at Palega at 3:30 p.m. against Burton High School. The championship game will be held on May 3 at Rossi at 3:30 p.m.
