Swimming season starts off shaky

The swim team of Abraham Lincoln High School looked confident and determined as they stretched before their meet. Their second meet, in which they swam against Washington High School, took place at the Sava Pool on Feb. 28. The swimmers showed off their free style, backstrokes, butterfly, and breaststrokes by swimming as quick as they could. The crowd consisting of a mere three people could tell from the swimmers’ tired facial expressions and heavy breathing that they had completed their race. The meet ended with the Varsity and Junior Varsity boys winning against the Wash eagles while the Varsity and JV girls unfortunately lost.
Although the girls didn’t take first place, the team is still disciplined on a daily basis. The team practices Monday to Thursday in the pool, competes on Fridays, and practices again on Saturdays on dry land. The mustangs usually practice for about two hours with kicking, stroking, and pulling drills. Despite the intense schedule, swimming is enjoyable for the whole team.
“I love swimming! I’ve been swimming competitively for five years. It’s a great sport with not many injuries, and you meet wonderful people. It’s very relaxing,” sophomore Allison Trinh said. “I love the team. We’re a family! Win or lose, we encourage and motivate each other to do the best we can.”
The next swim meet will take place on Friday at the Rossi Pool. The Lincoln mustangs will race the Balboa pirates at 4 p.m.
