"Smack that!" tennis ball

Even with some injuries, the ALHS tennis team pushes through their obstacles

The boy’s tennis team is confident in the success of this season. These kids know how the have fun and when to get serious out in the court at crunch time. They are all dedicated in the sport and to their coach.

Practicing six times a week with barely any room for breaks, they are sure to have a great season. Their four-hour practice schedule starts and ends off with a run.

The top singles player is freshmen Dillon Nguyen. The top doubles team is junior Allen Ly and senior Joseph Chew, who have great team chemistry. In fact, the whole team is compiled of great friends who hang out daily.

“Our doubles team is really good,” junior Aaron Wu said.

Their second singles player is a player from School of the Arts (SOTA). Sophomore Jun plays for Lincoln because his school does not have a team. Therefore, he gets to play for Lincoln. Our second doubles team is juniors Gordon Lim and Willis Wong, who have grown up together. In addition to their great chemistry, they are both left-handed. That might not seem too significant, but by being left-handed they have an advantage over a right-hander. A left-hander is able to put a different spin on the ball that a right-hander won’t be able to be used to.

So far, they’re off to a good start with only one loss against Lowell.

“I think [our season] is going to go super fantastic,” Dunn says.

The team is adjusting well to the transfer of their coaches from Simmons to Dunn, who’s dedication is enjoyed very much by her players. The tennis players all agree that she motivates them and encourages them to condition a lot.

This team is also going through some tough challenges. Two of the players are injured. Junior Aaron Wu has a sprained wrist and junior Willis Wong has a “tennis elbow,” a pain in the elbow every time it is bent or moved, due to the tearing of the elbow tissue. There is no doubt that they will overcome these challenges and remain on top. So far, they’re off to a good start with only one loss against Lowell.
