Softball girls are swinging strong

Lady mustangs win to cardinals 12-7

The girl’s softball team is starting off with a running start, as this year’s team has eight returning seniors, two returning sophomores, and eight new freshmen.

Modern World teacher and girls’ softball coach Kevin Grayson holds practice everyday after school for two hours, which has certainly paid off. Running, push-ups, and agility training are all a part of their daily routine. After beating Lowell High School 12-7, the softball team has been continuing with their tough conditioning.

“So far so good,” Grayson said. “Hopefully, we keep improving and work hard, and if we do we’ll have a successful year, and [continue] getting better every year.”

With Lowell High School being their biggest rivals so far, this year’s team has high hopes. Thanks to having a large number of experienced senior softball players, the team is experienced and confident.

A few of the key players are seniors Faatuai Tunai and Christine Collins. Tunai is a catcher and Collins is a pitcher. However, everyone plays a big part on the team, and they have worked hard together since January. Before the season had even started, the softball team began practicing. They did drills and got to know one another.

“We have a really good team this year,” senior captain Mindy Chan said. “I think we’ll be able to make it to playoffs.”

Chan, who has played on Abraham Lincoln High School’s softball team since her sophomore year, helps out everyone on the team, along with senior co-captains Tanya Lau and Jamie Mostert, who provide leadership on and off the field.

“As a group, [they] help everyone fall in line. Everyone’s playing well, [and] hopefully we can keep it going the whole year,” Grayson said

The main goals of the team this year are to have fun, to improve as individuals, to play as a team, and last but not least – to win the championship.
