Abraham Lincoln High School will have a sports medicine club on campus in the fall of 2007. This club will be established by the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Play Safe program, along with the school’s wellness center, which will attempt to promote health care professions to students that are interested.
Students that complete an application, meet the 2.0 minimum grade point average, and follow through with the conducted interview will be admitted in the club. Once they are admitted to the club, they’ll have monthly meetings as well as two hour training sessions each week with a certified athletic trainer on campus.
At each of the meetings and sessions, the trainer Jeni Jespersen will teach students basic athletic training that they can use when necessary. Students will learn how to treat minor injuries and about sports related heath issues. They’ll also be able to get hands on training by volunteering at local sports events, and helping at practices and games.
While learning useful skills and having a better understanding of the sports medicine field, students have other benefits as well for participation. They’ll eventually become certified in First Aid and CPR. There will also be some scholarship opportunities for future college plans.
“I think [joining the club] would be a great experience. Most people take these [opportunities] for granted,” sophomore Ariel Timmons said.
