A dawn of a new school year brings new students to Lincoln High – especially volleyball players. One of the new athletes to arrive is freshman Kelly Sung.
Kelly has already proven herself as an impressive athlete; though only a freshman, she has already made the varsity volleyball team. She started to play volleyball in the third grade for fun, but not until eighth grade did she become serious about it.
“I like the sport, and a lot of my family members play, so they teach me,” said Sung. Volleyball is a sport that runs in the Sung family. Every Sunday, they would go to a park and play. So far, her most memorable moment while playing volleyball was when her team, the San Francisco Juniors, went to the Junior Olympics, where they placed second out of a hundred and sixty teams.
Being on the varsity team proves just how accomplished a player she is. There is no question on how she became this good – Sung practices seven days a week.
Sung plays volleyball everyday: weekday practices with Lincoln, Saturday practices with the Holy Trinity league team, and Sundays with her family. To add to that, she continues to play volleyball with the San Francisco Juniors, one of the many volleyball clubs where one can play outside of school and off-season.
Besides volleyball, Sung also enjoys tennis and basketball. Like with volleyball, she plans to try out for the girl’s varsity basketball team. She plays basketball at the Basketball Club for the Enchantees team. Also, other than sports, Sung, like most girls, enjoys shopping and music – R&B and slow jams.
“I can’t go a day without music,” said Sung. Her favorite song is “Differences” by Ginuwine and her favorite artist is Chris Brown.
This Lincoln athlete dedicates her time to school as well as to sports, keeping up a steady 4.00 grade point average. Unfortunately, she earned 3.83 grade point average for the first quarter, but she is only motivated to work harder in school.
“Kelly’s a really hard working player,” said senior Christine Ng, co-captain of the girl’s varsity volleyball team. Sung has already left her mark on her fellow teammates.
“She’s a really good player and she’s really nice on and off the court,” said sophomore Lydia lee, who plays alongside Sung on the varsity team.
Despite being only her first year, she has already contributed loads to the team.
“It has been a real blessing for Lincoln to have such a talented freshman…it’s great that we have someone that’s not just talented in one place but in multiple positions,” said Charleston Chan, one of the coaches of the girl’s varsity volleyball team.
“She brings her best game every time, she comes in, plays strong, she’s focused…she brings a lot to the table.”
Being so young, there are endless oppurtunities out there for Sung. It is unimaginable as to what she can still accomplish over her high school years. “It’s pretty exciting. The fact that she’s a freshman right now [who] is on the varsity team, she’s got a future. I think she’s going to help the program tremendously as the years move along, and I think she will be really awesome by the time she’s a senior.” said Coach Charles.
