Lincoln High School’s varsity girls basketball team is coming to an end in their season, but according to senior Erica Thiu, who has been on the team for some time, the team has “had a great one.”
The girls came into the season after finishing their sixteen game pre-season with eight wins and eight losses – a bit slow because they had to cancel their first game against Mission High School due to the fact that Mission had no team.
Their second game against Balboa High School was cancelled because of a blackout. Despite their slow start, the girls have made an impressive leap into the season as they are now only three games away from the playoffs with a record of eight wins and two losses against Washington and Lowell High School.
The team isn’t looking at the losses though, because it was in their second game against Washington High School that the girls came made a comeback. Their chances at the championships are looking pretty good at the present.
As the girls enter the playoffs, they seem excited and confident. Despite the inexperience that some of the girls on the team have, they don’t need much help because they’ve got talent.
The starting five for this season is a line up of all stars, returning players, starting with: Hallie Menesas (10), Kelly Huey (11), Monica Washishu (11), Monique Thomas (11), and Jesse Jang (12) (guard).
Their practices are every day after school and run from 5:15 until 7:00. Their practices consist of a number of drills such as suicides, which are basically a running drill from each line on the court to the next and back,
They also do many shooting drills, and scrimmages, which are short games against each other to further improve their skills in the real game.
Many of the girls have been together since their freshman year and this bond has definatley made them strong on and off the court.
They are their own “family.”
